I love my Nokia N900

I love my Nokia N900 mobile gadget. Ok, I’m biased because I’m a Nokia employee currently. But honestly it’s a cool device. It’s running a Debian based linux distribution named Maemo. And that’s what makes this device so special. It’s a Linux computer in the palm of your hand. It has all the basic tools you’re familiar with on a linux machine. I can actually login to my phone via ssh or use it as a terminal to ssh or vpn anywhere.

There is already a lot of software available for the Maemo platform and installation is easy as issuing “apt-get install”.

The hardware is amazing as well. A very good 5 MP camera with gps geotagging. And the gps is the fastest I’ve seen so far. I don’t know how we achive a lock within a few seconds but this phone can do this.

The built-in bluetooth module can be used as a FM transmitter to stream music to any FM radio. The mediaplayer can play local audio, video and Internet streaming music. With the AV-out cable (which is included) you can play a big show on the TV screen. This even shows the normal screen, not only the videoclip.

The mobile version of the Firefox browser named Fennec was first released for Maemo. It supports the Mozilla Weave sync service. So I can keep my bookmarks and even tabs synchronized between my laptop and the N900.

Several plugins for sharing services integrate into the OS and offer publication of pictures or other stuff from most of the applications. Even a Skype client is available.

So overall maybe not an iPhone killer from UX point of view. But feature wise the iPhone looks a bit pale against the N900. And I have to admit… Since I have the N900 I don’t actually see the need for an iPhone for me. The N900 can do everything I need. And it has just started.
